The Queen's University of Belfast, often referred to as Queens, is located in the Northern Irish city of Belfast. The university was intended to be a part of the Queen's University of Northern Ireland, an institution of higher learning created in 1845. Queen's is the second oldest university in Northern Ireland and the ninth oldest in all of the United Kingdom. When it opened, it only had 343 students and 23 professors, which at the time was considered a large student population.
Today, the Queens University of Belfast has a population of over 25,000 undergraduates and postgraduate students. It has a research and teaching staff of over 1,500 and employees of over 3,500. It is known for its excellent education in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, law, the liberal arts, and humanities.

The university runs Northern Northern Ireland's only art house cinema called the Queens Film Theater. The Naughton Gallery at Queen's has an impressive collection of art pieces from significant names in the art world. A nightclub called the Shine is also located inside the university.
